We have made conscious strides to address DE&I within our business, and our near-term strategy includes the following goals:

Goal 1

Reduce employee turnover from 45% in 2021 to 30% by 2030 and 20% by 2050.

Goal 2

75% participation for the identified audiences for DE&I-specific training, equitable compensation and talent acquisition.

Goal 3

60% of employee base reflects communities for diversity, equity and inclusion.

Goal 4

Increase overall employee engagement.

At Summit, we value diversity, equity and inclusion in our workforce and pride ourselves on our commitment to inclusion at all levels. Respect for each other is a fundamental tenet of our company and a responsibility that belongs to all of Summit’s employees.

Summit is actively pursuing initiatives within our DE&I strategy to identify, assess and eliminate any barriers to recruitment, training, development and advancement opportunities. We have a crystal-clear policy that intolerance, from any source, is wholly unacceptable. We aim to reflect this effort across our organization from drivers to operations, to management and our Board of Directors.

ACHIEVING OUR SOCIAL IMPACT GOALS

We aim to create a workplace that attracts and retains high-quality talent, enhances employee welfare, offers an inclusive and respectful environment, and champions employee experiences and development.

We have several initiatives underway to reduce turnover, improve diversity and enhance employee engagement, including:

Emphasizing leadership development for approximately 500 front line leaders as a core foundational offering to our existing and upcoming leaders. This program provides confidence and skill development in areas such as organizational leadership, personal effectiveness, fostering engagement and building strong and capable teams.

Launching an employee stock purchase program to foster a culture of ownership to share in the success of our company. We believe that employee-investors are more likely to feel engaged, make sound decisions in the best interests of our stakeholders and engage more deeply in understanding Summit’s strategic objectives and financial performance.

我们的学习和发展进行扩张s to assess current and prospective employee objectives to achieve work life balance, give and receive constructive feedback, leverage innovation and best practices, and to prepare for the next step in their careers.

Standardizing the job architecture framework using best practices to provide the foundation and infrastructure for human capital management practices like talent movement, pay equity, career progression, workforce planning, and succession management to enhance the lateral and upward opportunities for our existing workforce.

健康和安全

健康和安全

The health and safety of our employees and community members is more than a value we hold dear. It’s who we are. We are disciplined in our approach to safety and measure our progress daily, benchmarking ourselves against best practices to drive continuous improvement. We also have a robust employee wellness program designed to improve long-term health so our employees and their families can enjoy long, fulfilling lives together.

EMPLOYEE WELLNESS

我们认为健康是持续增长的追求and balance in the many dimensions of a productive life. When most of us think of wellness, we tend to think of physical health, and things like nutrition, exercise, weight management, blood pressure, etc. We work hard to provide a holistic wellness program that is much more than that and promotes living a full integration of physical, mental and social well-being.

SAFETY CENTER OF EXCELLENCE

Summit is focused on driving value through innovation and adapting to changing conditions. A Center of Excellence (COE) is a team built to address this need. We’ve established a Safety COE to prioritize the highest safety standards and continuous improvement of our safety practices throughout our business to drive a culture of zero harm. Our workplace organization tool, 5S (sort, simplify, shine, standardize, sustain), includes procedures and processes to ensure that our work environments are clean, organized and improve hazard recognition. Our protocols are comprehensive, and adoption is critical to keeping ourselves, our colleagues and our communities safe.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Summit Materials and our family of companies are deeply rooted in the communities in which we operate. The relationship between our communities and our business began with building a coalition of well-established, community-focused, family-owned businesses, which continue to be valued and expanded at Summit Materials. We embrace the uniqueness of each of our operating companies, their culture and their established local partnerships with their respective communities.

We demonstrate our commitment to local communities through a variety of initiatives aimed at doing the most good on a local level. From volunteering at food banks to hosting educational programs for local students and highway cleanup initiatives, our companies are committed to positively impacting their communities. We believe that we are an integral part of the communities in which we operate, and Summit Materials strives to have a positive impact on the places where we live, work and play.

PARTNERING WITH LOCAL COMMUNITIES

We engage with the communities where we operate by listening, learning, sharing and receiving constructive feedback and comments regarding our operations. Summit embraces the uniqueness of each of our companies by recognizing their culture and establishing local partnerships with their respective communities.

Being a contributor to the development of sustainable cities and communities is integral to our business model and our core values. We work hard to have a positive impact in these places and to advance our programs and goals in alignment with our communities' and stakeholders’ needs.

PROMOTING STEM EDUCATION IN OUR COMMUNITIES

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) subjects affect virtually every component of our daily lives. Across the country, our companies are dedicating efforts to help ensure that today's students and tomorrow's leaders have access to great STEM education so that they can gain the knowledge they need to be successful in their chosen field. Throughout Summit Materials, we have educational programs that work with local students and teachers to inspire hands-on curriculum focused on geology, environmental sciences, chemistry and mining engineering. We believe that these efforts help expand students’ knowledge of the working world and open doors to our communities, enhancing dialogue and fostering successful partnerships.

We invite you to explore and learn more about our STEM education programs, which are included in our annual sustainability report.
