In 2017, he served as President, Cement & Southwest Ready Mix at Martin Marietta Materials, Inc., a supplier of construction aggregates and heavy building materials. Prior to joining Martin Marietta, Karl served in various leadership positions at Cemex, S.A.B. de C.V., a Mexican cement manufacturer, including President, Cemex USA. Prior to Cemex’s acquisition of Rinker Group Ltd., an Australian building materials supplier, Karl held various executive positions at Rinker in both the United States and Australia.

Austin Materials has worked closely with the Hill Country Conservancy and supplied base for the surface course on the Violet Crown Trail. It is planned to be a 30-mile regional trail that will act as a connector that will splice together a network of over 100 miles of trails in the Austin region.

Summit completed an acquisition of a 1.2 million short ton capacity cement plant in Davenport, Iowa along with seven cement distribution terminals from Lafarge North America Inc.. As a result of the acquisition, Summit owns 2.4 million short tons of cement production capacity across the two cement plants plus eight cement distribution terminals along the Mississippi River system ranging from Minneapolis, Minnesota to New Orleans, Louisiana.

Most work was being done by hand, mule carts, and some steam machinery; their first mechanical shovel cost $4,500.
